LE QUARTIER
Dans le 3ème arrondissement, à proximité de la gare Saint-Charles, le quartier de la Belle de Mai a longtemps été le siège de la manufacture des tabacs de Marseille. La zone industrielle du quartier est située au Sud, le long des voies ferrées et de la rue Guibal, tandis que le centre villageois de la Belle de Mai est situé en retrait, au Nord, jusqu’aux voies rapides aériennes de Plombières.
La manufacture désaffectée, devenue friche industrielle, a été rénovée et transformée en lieu culturel et patrimonial à partir des années 1990. Elle abrite désormais les Archives Municipales de Marseille, un Pôle Média et la Friche, important espace culturel. Quant à son nom, il semblerait qu’il évoque une « vinea bela de mai », désignant une vigne tardive « belle de reste ». Un bien joli nom pour cet historique quartier « rouge », aujourd’hui bien plus bigarré, dont l’avenir se dessine entre développement immobilier et noyau villageois aux mille et un lieux animés par la vie locale.
Quartier populaire, de nombreux commerces sont à proximité.
